Import rules
Commercial import of alcoholic spirits for domestic sale is strictly banned. Transporting alcohol across borders into Sharjah from wet emirates (such as Dubai or Ajman) or importing personal quantities without express authorization is illegal and subject to confiscation and prosecution under local prohibition rules.
Import duty on spirits (HS 2208)
50% CIF customs duty applied at UAE borders under the GCC Common Customs Tariff (HS 2208); however, entry for local commercial release within Sharjah is prohibited
Excise and taxes
Distilled spirits are exempt from the UAE Federal Excise Tax (which targets tobacco and sugar-sweetened drinks), but carry a 50% customs duty and 5% federal VAT; Sharjah charges no local municipality alcohol retail tax because commercial retail sales are prohibited
Retail and distribution
Banned. No retail liquor stores, supermarkets, hotels, bars, or restaurants are licensed to sell or serve alcohol in Sharjah. The only isolated historical exceptions are the airside Duty Free shop at Sharjah International Airport and the private members-only Sharjah Wanderers Sports Club.
Online sale and delivery
banned
Labelling
Federal UAE standards (GSO standards) mandate Arabic language labelling and alcohol percentage (% ABV) for authorized imports nationwide, but no domestic retail labelling or excise tax stamp regimes operate in Sharjah due to the complete trade ban
Advertising
Strictly banned. All advertising, direct promotion, billboard display, media broadcasting, and commercial sponsorship involving alcoholic beverages are completely prohibited under federal media laws and Sharjah local regulations
Legal definitions of spirits
UAE relies on Gulf Standardization Organization (GSO) standards for spirits (e.g. defining whisky, vodka, rum, gin, and neutral spirits, generally requiring a minimum ABV of 37.5%–40%), though local manufacture and commercial distribution are banned in Sharjah
Dry or restricted areas
The entire Emirate of Sharjah (including Sharjah City, Khor Fakkan, Kalba, Al Dhaid, and Dibba Al-Hisn) is designated a dry jurisdiction
Recent changes
- Sharjah maintains complete local prohibition under its 1985 edict despite UAE federal legal reforms (Federal Decree-Law No. 15 of 2020 and Federal Decree-Law No. 31 of 2021 Article 363), supported by UAE Federal Supreme Court Judgment No. 1308 of 2020 establishing that emirate-level prohibition laws take precedence over federal decriminalization.
- Enforcement authorities continue strict checks against bootlegging and unauthorized cross-border carriage of alcohol from neighboring emirates into Sharjah territory.
Opportunities for exporters
Direct commercial export opportunities to Sharjah do not exist due to the emirate's prohibition regime, leaving Sharjah International Airport Duty Free and diplomatic consignments as the only isolated avenues.
